Pentax ME Super
Pentax · Japan · 1980–1986 (6 years) · 135 film
The Pentax ME Super represents a refinement and consolidation of the successful ME model launched in 1977, embodying the compact, aperture-priority SLR concept that Pentax pioneered. Building upon the foundation of the groundbreaking ME, the ME Super introduced significant enhancements, most notably the crucial addition of full manual exposure control (shutter priority and manual modes) alongside its sophisticated aperture-priority system. This addressed the ME's primary limitation and made the camera far more versatile for demanding photographers. Its small size, lightweight magnesium alloy body, and reliable K2 mount lenses positioned it firmly against competitors like the Olympus OM series and Canon A-series appealing to enthusiasts wanting performance in a portable package. While not revolutionary in itself, the ME Super perfected the concept of the compact, feature-rich, electronically-controlled 35mm SLR for the early 1980s market, becoming a reliable workhorse for many amateur and semi-pro photographers during its production run from 1980 to 1986.
