Leica II
Leica · Germany · 1948–1951 (3 years) · 135 film
Produced between 1948 and 1951, this camera represents a significant evolution within Leitz's iconic Barnack series, building upon the foundational design introduced in 1932. As the first Leica camera to feature a built-in coupled rangefinder, it revolutionized focusing accuracy for photographers transitioning from larger formats. The rangefinder operated independently from the separate viewfinder, which was calibrated specifically for a 50mm lens; photographers using shorter or longer focal lengths were required to attach alternate viewfinders, highlighting the camera's early but sophisticated approach to 35mm photography. Its development traced back to Oskar Barnack's pioneering work at the Ernst Leitz microscope factory, where he envisioned a compact, portable camera system for general and professional use, cementing the 35mm format's viability. Manufactured concurrently with the Leica III series from 1933 onwards, this iteration demonstrated a long and influential production life that underscored its enduring design and importance in the history of miniature photography.
Technically, the camera maintained the robust, precision-milled construction characteristic of Barnack Leicas, utilizing a horizontally traveling cloth focal-plane shutter with speeds up to 1/500th second. The coupled rangefinder provided a major advantage over its predecessors and contemporaries by enabling highly accurate focusing, crucial for capturing sharp images in available light. While later models incorporated more complex features, this iteration solidified the rangefinder as an essential component of the 35mm camera system. Though specific prominent photographers associated with this exact late-production run are not readily documented, the broader Leica II series was widely used by photojournalists and documentary photographers who valued its portability and precision during a pivotal period in the medium's development.
