Exakta Patent Klapp Reflex Tropen (Tropical)
Exakta · Germany · 1924–1939 (15 years) · 135 film
The Patent Klapp Reflex Tropen represents an early innovation in 35mm camera design by the German manufacturer Ihagee, known for its Exakta brand. Introduced in the mid-1920s and continuing through 1939, this camera was notable for its folding reflex mechanism and tropical adaptations, making it one of the first weather-sealed SLR cameras aimed at challenging environments. Its 135 format and reflex viewing system positioned Exakta among the pioneers of 35mm single-lens reflex technology, preceding the company's more famous fixed-body Exakta SLRs by several years. The camera featured a distinctive clamshell design that protected the internal mechanism while allowing the viewing system to be deployed for composition. The tropical variant included specialized sealing and likely corrosion-resistant materials to withstand humid conditions, demonstrating an early understanding of environmental durability requirements for photographic equipment in tropical regions. Though not as widely adopted or influential as later Exakta models, it represents an important experimental phase in the evolution of 35mm SLR photography.
While the Patent Klapp Reflex Tropen was technically sophisticated for its time, it faced competition from emerging alternatives and was ultimately superseded by more practical designs. The folding mechanism, while innovative, likely added complexity and potential points of failure compared to rigid-bodied cameras. Its production period coincided with a transformative era in photography, as 35mm film began to challenge larger formats, but the camera's relatively high price point and specialized tropical focus limited its market penetration. Today, surviving examples are prized primarily for their historical significance as early reflex cameras and their rarity, particularly in functional tropical-adapted condition. The camera's legacy lies less in widespread adoption and more in Exakta's continued development toward the iconic SLR designs that would come to define mid-century 35mm photography.
