Leica M6 TTL .85 Safari (Millenium)
Leica · Germany · 2000 · 135 film
The Leica M6 TTL .85 Safari (Millennium) is a special edition variant of the highly regarded Leica M6 TTL rangefinder camera, launched in 2000 to commemorate the new millennium. Building upon the classic Leica M6 chassis, the M6 TTL introduced essential through-the-lens (TTL) metering for the first time in the M series, significantly improving exposure accuracy for photographers. The camera retained the legendary M system's core strengths: a precision coupled rangefinder coupled to bright viewfinders (the .85 model offering a larger, brighter viewfinder ideal for lenses 50mm and longer), superb build quality using magnesium alloy top/bottom plates and brass components, and the tactile, mechanical precision Leica users value. It represented the pinnacle of the traditional Leica M film experience before the digital M8 (2006) transition.
This specific Safari edition featured a distinctive olive green finish for the top plate and base, paired with champagne-colored brass trim (the film door and viewfinder surround), creating a unique aesthetic inspired by classic field gear. Limited in production, it served as a desirable collector's item rather than a technically groundbreaking model, offering the core M6 TTL performance wrapped in a memorable, utilitarian-chic appearance. It exemplifies Leica's tradition of creating special editions that cater to enthusiast and collector markets, adding a stylistic chapter to the enduring M6 lineage without altering its fundamental photographic capabilities.
