Kiev 4AM (black)
Kiev · Ukraine · 1980–1987 (7 years) · 135 film
The Kiev 4AM (black) is a 35mm rangefinder camera produced by Arsenal in Kyiv, Ukraine, from 1980 to 1987. Essentially a refinement of the long-running Kiev 4 series, it represents the Soviet Union's continued production of cameras based on the pre-war Contax II design. Utilizing the reliable Contax-mount and a coupled rangefinder system, it offered manual focus with typical Soviet precision but often with less refined ergonomics than its West German inspiration. The camera features a leaf shutter with speeds typically ranging from 1/1000s to 1s plus B, and accepts M39 screw mount lenses via an adapter, providing access to a range of Soviet optics. While built robustly with a die-cast body and metal construction, the finish could be inconsistent. It served as a functional, affordable workhorse for Soviet photographers during the Cold War, fulfilling a role similar to its Contax ancestor but lacking the prestige or technological advancement of contemporary Japanese or German counterparts.
