Pentax ME F (black)
Pentax · Japan · 1982 · 135 film
Introduced in 1982, the Pentax ME F (black) is a 35mm SLR camera representing a significant, though incremental, step for Pentax. Building upon the highly successful ME and ME Super models, the ME F's primary distinction was its pioneering autofocus capability, making it one of the first autofocus SLRs from a major Japanese manufacturer. It utilized a passive TTL phase-detection system via a dedicated sensor module located near the pentaprism. This autofocus mechanism, while revolutionary at the time, was relatively slow and limited compared to later systems, often requiring the user to half-press the shutter button to lock focus. Despite this innovation, the ME F retained the core characteristics of its predecessors: a compact, lightweight body with a full range of manual aperture priority exposure modes, reliable K-mount lens compatibility, and a straightforward control layout favored by enthusiasts and serious amateurs seeking a portable yet capable system camera. It embodied Pentax's commitment to refining the 35mm SLR experience in the early 1980s.
