Exakta Pentacon FB
Exakta · Germany · 1959 · 135 film
The Pentacon FB was introduced by Exakta in 1959 as part of their line of single-lens reflex cameras for the 135 (35mm) format. As East German manufacturer of Exakta products, Pentacon continued the legacy of Exakta's pioneering SLR designs while adapting to post-war manufacturing constraints. The camera featured a waist-level viewfinder characteristic of Exakta models, allowing for viewing through a ground glass screen with an upright but reversed image. This design harkened back to Exakta's earlier innovations in SLR photography while catering to photographers accustomed to this viewing method.
With its sturdy metal construction and full range of interchangeable lenses, the Pentacon FB offered reliable performance for serious amateur and professional photographers of its era. The camera represented the maturation of SLR technology in the late 1950s, featuring focal plane shutter speeds typically ranging from 1 second to 1/1000th, along with standard 35mm film loading and advance mechanisms. While not as revolutionary as some competitors of its time, the Pentacon FB demonstrated the viability of East German manufacturing in the precision camera market during the Cold War era.
