Canon VT de Luxe (black)

Canon · Japan · 1957 · 135 film

The Canon VT de Luxe represents a refined milestone in Canon's early development of 35mm single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras. Introduced in 1957 as an enhanced version of the preceding Canon VT, it featured significant improvements including the introduction of a rapid wind lever on the camera base, allowing faster film advancement than the knob-wound predecessor. It maintained the Canon bayonet lens mount (later known as the "R" mount), compatibility with the Canon Viewfinder RF-EE, and offered a choice of black or chrome finishes. While sharing the basic body design and cloth focal-plane shutter speeds (up to 1/1000 sec) with the VT, the "de Luxe" designation signaled incremental refinements in finish and ergonomics. Positioned between Canon's early rangefinders and the groundbreaking Canonflex series, the VT de Luxe was a competent and relatively affordable SLR, contributing significantly to Canon establishing its presence in the growing SLR market just before the revolutionary Canonflex (1959).
