Leica M5 'FM'

Leica · Germany · 1975 · 135 film

The M5 'FM', introduced by Leica in 1975, represents a significant evolution within the venerable Leica M series of rangefinder cameras. Distinguished as the first M camera to incorporate through-the-lens (TTL) metering via a cell placed behind the reflex mirror housing, it brought modern exposure automation to the flagship rangefinder line. This innovation addressed market demands for greater ease of use, complementing Leica's core reputation for precision engineering and superb image quality. The camera featured a significantly larger, brighter viewfinder compared to its predecessors, incorporating brightlines for 50mm and 75mm lenses (with optional frames for other focal lengths), offering a more comprehensive viewing experience. Constructed with Leica's characteristic robustness, featuring brass top and bottom plates and a leatherette covering, the M5 maintained the series' iconic build quality while streamlining ergonomics with a simplified top plate layout.

Produced concurrently with the more conventional M4-P, the M5 occupied a unique niche. Despite its technological advancements and Leica pedigree, its initial reception was mixed. Some purists found the viewfinder larger than necessary and the metering system less intuitive than the external CdS cells used in contemporaries like the Canonet QL17. However, its TTL metering proved highly accurate and reliable, cementing its value for serious photographers seeking a compact, no-compromise tool. Production ceased relatively quickly around 1977, making it a shorter-lived model than its M series siblings. Today, it is appreciated by Leica aficionados for its innovations and represents a crucial transitional period where traditional rangefinder design embraced modern exposure control, embodying the tension between Leica's heritage and evolving photographic technology.
