Leica M6J "40 Jahre M" (40th Anniversary, black)
Leica · Germany · 1994 · 135 film
The Leica M6J "40 Jahre M" (40th Anniversary, black) is a special edition camera released in 1994 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Leica M rangefinder system, first introduced in 1954. As a limited version of the highly regarded M6 model, the M6J features a distinctive black finish with silver trim and special engravings marking this significant milestone. Built with Leica's traditional craftsmanship, the camera incorporates a brass body with a leatherette covering, precision mechanical construction, and the excellent viewfinder and rangefinder system that made the M6 series a favorite among professional photographers. Only 1,750 units were produced, each with unique serial numbers and accompanied by a matching black leather case and certificate of authenticity, making it particularly desirable among collectors.
The M6J represents the pinnacle of Leica's purely mechanical rangefinder technology just before the introduction of electronic features in later models. It maintains the same functionality as the standard M6, with framelines for 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 75mm, and 90mm lenses, and the reliable cloth focal-plane shutter with speeds from 1 to 1/1000 second plus bulb. As the final M6 model before Leica began incorporating electronic components, the M6J holds a special place in the transition from purely mechanical to hybrid systems. Its continued popularity among photographers who value traditional manual techniques demonstrates how Leica's classic design principles transcend technological trends while commemorating a significant milestone in the company's history.
