Yashica YE (Nicca)
Yashica · Japan · 1959 · 135 film
Introduced in 1959 as Yashica's first venture into the Leica-style 35mm rangefinder market after acquiring the Nicca company and its designs, the Yashica YE (often referred to as the Nicca YE) represents a significant transitional step for the Japanese manufacturer. Sharing its core design, including the distinctive Nicca bayonet lens mount, with Nicca's final models, the YE adapted the Leica M3-inspired rangefinder system but integrated it with Yashica's own take on the body design and specifications. It featured coupled rangefinder and viewfinder in a single bright window, offering a clear view and parallax correction, along with cloth focal-plane shutter speeds typically ranging from 1 second to 1/500th plus 'B'. While not revolutionary in its own right, the YE firmly established Yashica's capability and intent to compete seriously in the burgeoning 35mm interchangeable lens camera segment against established European brands. Its production was relatively short-lived, making it a tangible piece of the company's early evolution before the rise of their more distinct Electro and Mat lines.
