Praktica Praktina
Praktica · Germany · 1952–1953 (1 years) · 135 film
Produced in 1952-1953, the Praktina stands as Praktica's ambitious debut into the competitive 35mm single-lens reflex (SLR) market. Designed as a more advanced system camera than the company's earlier models, it featured a distinctive modular approach. Key innovations included the introduction of interchangeable lenses via the reliable Praktica M42 mount and interchangeable viewfinders (standard pentaprism, waist-level, and specialized types). This system flexibility was a significant step for Praktica, aiming to offer greater versatility comparable to contemporaries like Exakta and Contaflex. However, the camera was burdened by practical limitations; its ergonomics were often criticized as awkward, especially regarding the film advance mechanism requiring disengaging the shutter before winding, and its overall size and build, while robust metal construction, felt substantial for its capabilities. Ultimately, its high launch price relative to Praktica's budget image and these operational quirks resulted in very limited production and commercial success, lasting only about a year before being replaced by the improved Praktina I.
