Leica R3 MOT red

Leica · Germany · 1979 · 135 film

Introduced in 1979, the Leica R3 MOT red is a distinct variant of the Leica R3, a 35mm single-lens reflex (SLR) camera. The R3 represented a significant moment for Leica, marking their first collaboration with Minolta for electronic SLR technology. While sharing its core mechanics and TTL metering system with the standard R3, the MOT version is distinguished by its distinctive red plastic top cover and base plate, a departure from Leica's traditional minimalist black finish. This bold color scheme, likely intended to differentiate the MOT model and appeal to a different segment, has since become its most defining characteristic. Functionally, it offered the solid build and excellent optics of the Leica R system, including compatibility with Leica R lenses.

As part of the Leica R line, the R3 MOT red provided a bridge between Leica's iconic rangefinder tradition and the modern electronic SLR era. It featured a robust die-cast body, a shutter with speeds from 1 to 1/1000 second, and the renowned Leicaflex/R series finder and metering system. The red accents, however, positioned it slightly outside the typical Leica aesthetic, making it a more unique, albeit perhaps less conventional, member of the family. Its significance lies more in its distinct visual identity within the Leica R lineup and its role during the transition period than in groundbreaking technological innovation.
